Аннотация

The study of transformation of the Serbian society in the context of the change of the state’s foreign policy strategy at the beginning of the 21st century is presented. It is stressed that the establishment of the government (more loyal to the West) after 5 October Overthrow did not express public opinion; it was the consequence of the US policy. It is revealed that the pro-Western political course held by the new government led to the split in the Serbian society. State cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the Kosovo session was perceived by a significant part of the population as a betrayal of the national interests. However the implementation of European values in the society led to the formation of a pro-European political stratum that call for forgetting all the humiliation for the sake of economic stability. It is concluded that the current political situation and the lack of consensus on the key political issues in the country makes Serbia a weak state.
