The study of the role of religious and political component in social changes is presented. The evolution of the relations between religion and politics in the countries of Western Europe is demonstrated. The variability of church position towards political forces and government is stressed. On the basis of religion and politics functions the reasons of the priority of religious and political component in social changes in Russia are revealed. It is stated that religion is able to fulfil organizational and political functions motivating political actions, forming ideology and promoting the creation of political doctrines. It is concluded that interaction and cooperation between religion and politics will continue developing in Russia that will lead to the strengthening of Christian institutions in social life.
