The paper presents a cross-country sociological research of evaluations by ordinary people of democracy functioning in Russia. The ideas of Russians about the importance of various features of democracy as a form of state political system are studied. The comparative analysis of satisfaction with the development of democracy of Russians and European residents is carried out. The sceptical assessment by Russians of the development of democracy in the country is stated. Evidence is offered of the existence of essential divergence between expectations of the population concerning democracy and the modern Russian reality. It is noted that unjustified social expectations can determine the disappointment of the population in democracy per se.
