Abstract

The phenomenon of the artist community is studied in the framework of collective action theory and the theory of collective subject. The analysis of Russian artist associations of the second half of the 19th century is used to illustrate the need for a typology of artist communities. These collectives formed in the opposition to the official art institutions and functioned as “sociality laboratories” of new art styles, social forms and artist interaction models. Informal communication was a significant factor of this process.

Keywords: artist community, collective action, collective subject, collective activity.
